Mood and Weight Loss

Have you ever happened to notice that when you’re angry or upset, your dietary habits seem to change? Some people eat more, some people eat less, and some people just eat poorly. It is fairly common to see someone going through any period of high emotion make a few changes to their diet, even if it's unintentional. Personally, I tend to eat less when I’m upset or stressed and a healthy amount when I’m happy and relaxed. While this does mean that my weight will normally go down if I am dealing with something upsetting, it doesn’t mean that it’s a good reason for me to lose weight. In fact, it can be an unhealthy method of weight loss, even though it is unintentional.

It has been shown time and time again through scientific studies that a person’s mental health can affect their weight and vice versa. Things like depression can look so different from one person to the next. For some people, depression is laying in bed and not being able to do daily tasks such as getting into the shower or brushing their teeth. For others, depression may show up as comedy and smiles to the point where it doesn’t appear that they have any mental health issues at all. You can simply look at some of the celebrities that we have lost to suicide to see that there is a clear difference in how it manifests. This is no different from how it physically shows up. For some, mental health issues mean that someone appears to be overweight while others may be dangerously skinny.

On a smaller scale, you might find that your mood from day to day changes what you eat and how much of it you eat. While this normally isn’t a big deal, it is something to keep an eye on to make sure it doesn’t turn into a dangerous habit of either undereating or overeating. Naturally, neither are good and it is important to keep note of.
